Amarillo, Texas – Residents across the Texas Panhandle should limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day as temperatures climb above 100 degrees through the workweek, bringing a growing risk of heat-related illness. While rain chances remain limited, any storm that develops could produce dangerous lightning and strong wind gusts.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, dangerous heat will be the dominant weather story through at least Friday. High temperatures are expected to range from 100 to 108 degrees Wednesday, 100 to 109 degrees Thursday, and 98 to 108 degrees Friday. Heat risk is forecast to increase from moderate to major on Wednesday, becoming major to extreme Thursday before remaining moderate to extreme Friday.
Forecasters note only a 10% chance of thunderstorms Wednesday, increasing to 20% Thursday before dropping back to 10% Friday. Despite the low coverage, any storm that forms could generate gusty winds and frequent lightning, creating hazards for anyone working outdoors, traveling or attending summer events.
Communities including Amarillo, Canyon, Borger, Dumas, Pampa and Hereford should take precautions by staying hydrated, wearing lightweight clothing and scheduling outdoor activities during the morning or evening whenever possible. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
The prolonged stretch of triple-digit heat will continue to be the primary concern across the Panhandle, with only isolated storm chances offering little relief. Additional heat-related statements or advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
