Springfield, Missouri – Severe storms are rapidly developing across southwest and central Missouri this evening, with a Tornado Watch in effect until 1 a.m. as conditions support tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and large hail.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 87 includes key population centers such as Springfield, Joplin, Sedalia, and Rolla, along with surrounding counties including Greene, Jasper, Pettis, and Phelps. The watch spans major travel routes like I-44, U.S. 65, and U.S. 60, where storms could intensify quickly after sunset.

The most dangerous window stretches through late evening into the early overnight hours, when storms may organize into rotating cells capable of producing brief tornadoes. Wind gusts over 60 mph and hail large enough to damage vehicles are also possible.

Residents in cities including Lebanon, Fort Leonard Wood, and Nevada should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Nighttime storms increase the risk, especially for those without reliable alert systems.

Charge devices, enable emergency alerts, and identify a safe shelter location now. Avoid unnecessary travel as storms approach.

The tornado watch remains in effect until 1 a.m., and additional warnings are likely as storms track east across Missouri overnight.
