Aberdeen, South Dakota – Snow and blowing wind are already making travel difficult across north-central South Dakota, with a much more dangerous storm set to arrive late Thursday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through Thursday afternoon, bringing an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow and reduced visibility in gusty winds up to 35 mph. Roads across U.S. 12 and U.S. 83 near Aberdeen, Mobridge, and Eureka may become slick, especially during the morning and evening commute.
Conditions are expected to worsen significantly late Thursday night as a Winter Storm Watch takes effect through Saturday afternoon. Forecasters warn of 8 to 11 inches of snow combined with light ice accumulation and continued gusty winds, which could create blowing snow and near-whiteout conditions at times.
Communities including Ipswich, Sisseton, and Gettysburg could see prolonged impacts, with rural roads becoming difficult or impossible to travel.
Residents are urged to limit travel, prepare emergency kits, and monitor updates closely as multiple rounds of winter weather impact the region.
Warnings are likely to expand as confidence increases in significant snow and ice through the weekend.
