Duluth, Minnesota – Roads could become snow-covered and dangerous by 1 a.m. Thursday as a prolonged winter storm begins impacting northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, with multiple rounds lasting into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for areas along the North Shore, including Two Harbors and Grand Marais, where 5 to 7 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 45 mph could create blowing snow and reduced visibility through Friday morning.

Farther inland, including Duluth, Hibbing, Brainerd, and International Falls, a Winter Weather Advisory calls for 4 to 6 inches of snow and a light glaze of ice beginning early Thursday and continuing through early Friday. Snowfall during daylight hours may create slushy, rapidly changing road conditions.

In northwest Wisconsin, including Ashland, Hayward, and Phillips, ice accumulations up to 0.3 inches combined with snow could lead to tree damage and scattered power outages.

A second, stronger system arrives Friday afternoon into Saturday night, bringing another round of heavy snow and ice across the region.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for possible outages, and monitor updates as this multi-day storm continues through the weekend.
