Kanawha County, WV – The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office has released details from a vehicle pursuit that ended with the arrest of a suspect who allegedly fled from a traffic stop before abandoning a stolen vehicle and running on foot.
According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred in June 2024 when Corporal Crosier attempted to stop a vehicle after noticing its license plate was not properly registered to the vehicle.
Rather than pulling over, the driver allegedly fled, leading deputies on a pursuit. The sheriff’s office said that after leaving the roadway and entering a grassy field, the driver abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot.
Authorities identified the driver as Gregory Whittington. Deputies said Corporal Crosier located Whittington after the foot chase and took him into custody.
Following the arrest, investigators learned the vehicle involved in the pursuit had been reported stolen.
The incident is being highlighted as part of the sheriff’s office’s “Kanawha County Pursuit Files” video series, which showcases notable cases and the challenges deputies face during law enforcement operations. Officials said the series is intended to highlight the importance of training, decision-making, and perseverance during dangerous situations.
The allegations against Whittington have not been proven in court.
