Birmingham, Alabama – Central Alabama residents are facing another day of dangerous heat, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the lower and middle 90s and heat index values approaching 105 degrees. While scattered showers and thunderstorms may offer brief relief in some communities later today, the oppressive heat remains the primary concern.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, areas of morning fog and low clouds will dissipate through the morning, allowing temperatures to rise quickly. A Heat Advisory remains in effect for much of central Alabama through Tuesday evening, with highs expected to range from 93 to 97 degrees across the region.
Cities including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, Jasper, Clanton, Selma, Demopolis, Anniston, Gadsden, Alexander City, Auburn, Troy and Eufaula are expected to experience the hottest conditions. Afternoon thunderstorms are expected to develop in scattered locations, but not everyone will receive rainfall, and any cooling will likely be brief.
Southwest winds around 5 to 10 mph will do little to offset the heat. Anyone spending time outdoors should drink plenty of water, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and limit strenuous activities during the hottest part of the afternoon. Children and pets should never be left unattended in parked vehicles.
Motorists and outdoor workers should remain alert for rapidly developing thunderstorms later today, as lightning and brief heavy downpours could accompany stronger cells. The heat advisory remains in effect through Tuesday evening, and additional weather alerts could be issued if heat or thunderstorm activity becomes more widespread.
