Medford, Ore. – A smoky haze hangs over the Rogue Valley this morning, muting the sunshine and reminding residents that wildfire season is already affecting southern Oregon. As Monday unfolds, temperatures will climb toward the upper 90s while smoke continues to create air quality concerns before even hotter weather arrives during the middle of the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect until noon Monday for Jackson, Klamath, Lake, and Siskiyou counties. Wildfire smoke may cause air quality to fluctuate into unhealthy levels, particularly for children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with heart or lung conditions.

A slight 20 percent chance of showers lingers through late Monday morning before skies remain mostly cloudy and hot. Patchy smoke is expected into the afternoon before gradually easing. High temperatures reach 98 degrees Monday, then soar to 102 Tuesday and 103 Wednesday under mostly sunny skies.

The combination of extreme heat and lingering smoke increases health risks. Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon, stay well hydrated, and move activities indoors if smoke becomes noticeable. Running a HEPA air purifier or using a clean indoor space can help reduce smoke exposure.

Travel along Interstate 5, Highway 99, and surrounding Rogue Valley roads should remain generally good, although localized smoke could briefly reduce visibility in some areas. Drivers should watch for changing conditions, especially during the morning hours.

By Thursday, temperatures ease slightly to around 98 degrees, but conditions remain hot and dry. No widespread rain is expected after today’s slight shower chance, allowing the summer heat to remain firmly in place across southern Oregon.

More weather statements or updated air quality advisories may be issued if wildfire smoke shifts or intensifies. Are you seeing smoky skies where you live? Share what conditions look like in your neighborhood.
