Grand Rapids, Mich. – A smoky haze still hangs over West Michigan late Monday morning, dulling the skyline and leaving the air noticeably heavier as another round of Canadian wildfire smoke settles across the Lower Peninsula. The smoky start won’t be the only weather concern today. Thunderstorms are expected to develop later, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds to the evening commute.
According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), a statewide Air Quality Alert remains in effect through Monday because of elevated fine particulate pollution from Canadian wildfire smoke. Air quality across the Lower Peninsula is expected to reach Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups, with smoke lingering through much of the day before gradually improving as winds shift.
Residents with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions should limit prolonged outdoor activity. If smoke becomes more noticeable, move exercise indoors, keep windows closed, and use air conditioning with a high-efficiency filter if available.
Conditions begin changing this afternoon as a cold front approaches. According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, patchy smoke will give way to increasing clouds before showers and thunderstorms become widespread tonight. Rain chances climb to 90 percent, and some storms could produce wind gusts up to 23 mph, torrential downpours, and frequent lightning. While widespread severe weather is not currently expected, an isolated stronger storm cannot be ruled out.
Drivers along Interstates 96, 196, and U.S. 131 should expect changing travel conditions this evening. Heavy rain may reduce visibility, while water could collect on roadways during the heaviest downpours. Allow extra travel time and slow down on wet pavement.
Behind the front, Tuesday turns noticeably drier with mostly sunny skies and highs near 82 degrees, although west winds could gust to 31 mph. Wednesday brings sunny skies and a comfortable high around 77 degrees, followed by pleasant summer weather Thursday with highs near 81 degrees.
Long-range outlooks continue to favor above-normal temperatures returning later next week after this brief stretch of cooler weather.
