Milwaukee, Wis. – A smoky haze still hangs over southeastern Wisconsin late Monday morning, softening the skyline and limiting air quality just hours before thunderstorms threaten to sweep across the region. Residents face a changing weather day, with unhealthy air early, followed by the potential for heavy rain, damaging winds, and dangerous conditions during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, an Air Quality Advisory remains in effect until noon Monday across much of Wisconsin, including Milwaukee, Madison, Racine, Kenosha, Waukesha, Fond du Lac, Green Bay, Janesville, and surrounding communities. Fine particulate pollution from Canadian wildfire smoke has pushed air quality into the Unhealthy category in some locations, while parts of northeastern Wisconsin have experienced Very Unhealthy conditions.
Sensitive groups should avoid prolonged outdoor activity through late morning. Everyone else should reduce strenuous outdoor exercise if smoke remains noticeable. If you have asthma or heart disease, keep medications nearby and move activities indoors if symptoms develop.
Conditions begin changing this afternoon. Meteorologists are now tracking a line of thunderstorms expected to develop from late Monday morning through Monday evening as a cold front moves across Wisconsin. According to the National Weather Service, all severe weather hazards remain possible, with damaging wind gusts representing one of the primary concerns. Heavy rainfall could also reduce visibility on Interstates 94, 43, and 41, slowing travel during the evening commute.
Beachgoers should also use caution along the Lake Michigan shoreline. A High Swim Risk continues for beaches in Ozaukee and Sheboygan counties, where powerful waves and dangerous currents make swimming hazardous. Stay away from piers, breakwalls, and river outlets, where currents are often strongest.
By Tuesday, lingering patchy smoke gives way to a much lower storm chance, with highs near 84 degrees. A few isolated afternoon thunderstorms remain possible before cooler, drier air settles in. Wednesday brings sunny skies and a comfortable high near 77 degrees, followed by pleasant summer weather Thursday with highs in the lower 80s.
Long-range outlooks continue to favor above-normal temperatures returning later next week, although the midweek stretch should provide a welcome break from both the smoke and stormy conditions.
