Maryland – Warm air is already building across Baltimore, and the calm start won’t last as storms begin to fire up later this afternoon, threatening the evening commute with sudden downpours and gusty winds.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered thunderstorms are expected mainly after 3 p.m., with a few storms capable of producing damaging winds and hail through early evening . Rain chances climb toward 80 percent tonight, with rainfall totals between a half inch and three-quarters of an inch possible.

This developing system stretches along the I-95 corridor from Virginia through Maryland into Pennsylvania, part of a broader spring pattern fueling storms across the Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley. While not every location sees severe weather, conditions may deteriorate quickly in stronger cells.

In Baltimore, expect impacts along I-95, I-695, and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway during peak travel hours. Wet pavement and sudden heavy rain could reduce visibility and slow traffic. Keep headlights on and allow extra braking distance.

Air travel may also see delays at BWI Marshall Airport if lightning moves overhead during peak departure times. Outdoor plans should wrap up early or shift indoors by late afternoon.

Conditions remain unsettled into tonight with additional showers and patchy fog developing. Thursday brings cooler air and lingering showers before a warmer, quieter stretch arrives Friday into Saturday.

Looking ahead, Sunday trends wetter again, which could affect early April travel and plans leading into the week ahead.
