Belville, N.C. –North Carolina is turning up the heat this Monday, and the hottest part of the day could become dangerous across the Wilmington area. The sun is breaking through early clouds, humidity is climbing fast, and the air will feel far hotter than the thermometer suggests. Before scattered afternoon thunderstorms offer limited relief, dangerous heat will dominate much of southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday. Heat index values are expected to reach 107 degrees, creating conditions where heat-related illnesses become more likely with prolonged outdoor exposure. Afternoon temperatures will climb to around 95 degrees, while southwest winds of 6 to 10 mph may gust as high as 15 mph.
Anyone working or exercising outside should limit strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon. Drink water frequently, take breaks in air-conditioned buildings, and check on older adults, children and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a short time.
Drivers on U.S. Highway 17, U.S. Highway 74/76 and Interstate 140 should also prepare for isolated thunderstorms developing after 1 p.m. Although rain coverage remains limited today with only a 20% chance, any storm could briefly reduce visibility, produce lightning and leave slick pavement.
The heat continues Tuesday with a high near 94 degrees and heat index values approaching 105 degrees before scattered afternoon thunderstorms return. Wednesday remains hot with highs around 94 degrees, but the weather pattern becomes more active late Wednesday into Thursday. Rain chances increase sharply to 70% and 80%, with periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms becoming likely as a stronger weather system approaches the Carolina coast.
Looking beyond midweek, temperatures ease slightly into the upper 80s, but above-normal warmth is expected to continue across the region into late next week.
