Boston, Massachusetts – Temperatures across southern New England are swinging sharply, with a mild 70-degree day quickly giving way to a chilly 40s cooldown and repeated rounds of rain through the end of the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a backdoor cold front will push into eastern Massachusetts, causing temperatures to drop rapidly by Thursday while bringing scattered rain showers. Highs near 70 degrees Wednesday will fall into the low 40s by Thursday, especially along the I-95 corridor from Boston to Providence.

Rain chances will persist in waves through Friday and into the weekend, with on-and-off showers affecting travel across major routes like I-90 and Route 1. Temperatures will continue to fluctuate, rebounding into the 60s Friday before climbing back near 70 Saturday, then easing slightly by Sunday.

These swings could create changing road conditions, particularly during periods of rain and cooler air moving in off the Atlantic. Coastal areas may feel the sharpest temperature drops as the front pushes inland.

Residents should prepare for shifting conditions day to day, keeping rain gear handy and planning for cooler air returning quickly after brief warmups. Additional updates are expected as the front stalls and moves through the region.
