Grand Junction, Colorado – Travel across western Colorado is already being impacted this morning as snow piles up over mountain passes and steady rain creates slick roads in lower elevations.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, elevations above 9,000 feet could see 6 to 12 inches of snow through this evening, with the heaviest impacts along high mountain corridors including portions of I-70. Lower elevations, including Grand Junction, Montrose, and Delta, will see periods of valley rain with occasional moderate to heavy bursts reducing visibility.

Road conditions are expected to improve slightly by the afternoon as temperatures rise, but wet pavement and runoff could still cause travel slowdowns. Drivers heading through mountain routes should prepare for winter driving conditions, especially during the morning hours.

Attention then shifts to a sharp temperature drop overnight. Southwest Colorado valleys, including Cortez and Durango, could see freezing conditions develop by late tonight, with a more widespread freeze possible Thursday night through Saturday night.

Residents are urged to protect sensitive plants, check heating systems, and remain alert for changing road conditions. Additional advisories may be issued as colder air settles into the region.
