Des Moines, Iowa – Severe thunderstorms could disrupt travel and trigger power outages across Iowa, northern Missouri, and western Illinois by the Friday afternoon commute as a volatile storm system intensifies.
According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, storms are expected to rapidly develop Friday afternoon across Iowa before tracking southeast into northern Missouri and western Illinois through the evening hours. The highest risk zone, including Des Moines, Ottumwa, and St. Joseph, sits under an enhanced Level 3 out of 5 threat, signaling a greater likelihood of widespread severe storms.
Damaging winds remain the primary hazard, with gusts exceeding 60 to 70 mph capable of downing trees and power lines. Tornado development is also possible, particularly across southern Iowa into northern Missouri, while large hail over 2 inches in diameter could impact communities from Ames to Quincy.
Major corridors including I-35, I-80, and I-70 may see rapid deterioration in driving conditions with blinding rain and debris. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, review shelter plans, and stay alert for rapidly changing warnings Friday afternoon.
Storms are expected to continue into Friday night, with additional watches and warnings likely as the system pushes east.
