Detroit, Mich. – A hazy sky is settling over southeast Michigan late Monday morning, and the smoky air may be the first thing many people notice before stepping outside. According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), a statewide Air Quality Alert remains in effect Monday as Canadian wildfire smoke pushes elevated fine particle pollution across much of Michigan. The National Weather Service expects patchy smoke to develop after 10 a.m., with temperatures reaching 83 degrees this afternoon. Clouds increase through the day before rain chances rapidly climb Monday evening. Showers and thunderstorms become likely after dark, with an 80% chance of rain through the night.
Tuesday remains active as another round of showers and thunderstorms develops during the afternoon. Some storms could produce heavy downpours, gusty winds, frequent lightning, and localized flooding. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, an isolated stronger storm cannot be ruled out as a cold front approaches. Motorists traveling along I-75, I-94, I-96, I-696, and the Lodge Freeway should be prepared for sudden reductions in visibility during heavier rain Tuesday afternoon.
Keep windows closed if smoke becomes noticeable indoors, especially if someone in your household has asthma or other respiratory conditions. Running central air with a high-efficiency filter can help improve indoor air quality. If thunderstorms develop while you’re commuting, slow down and allow extra stopping distance on wet pavement.
