Atlanta, Ga. – Bright sunshine is taking control across north Georgia late Monday morning, and the heat is building quickly. Pavement is warming fast, the air feels increasingly humid, and afternoon temperatures are headed into the lower 90s. While today brings only a small chance of a brief storm, a much more active weather pattern develops by Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service, Atlanta will climb to 93 degrees Monday, with heat index values reaching 99 degrees during the afternoon. Only a 10% chance of an isolated shower or thunderstorm exists after 4 p.m., allowing most communities to stay dry through the daytime hours.
The bigger concern arrives later this week. Tuesday remains hot with a high near 92 degrees and only isolated afternoon storms. By Wednesday, moisture increases across north Georgia, pushing rain chances to 50% as scattered afternoon thunderstorms become more widespread. Some storms may produce gusty winds, frequent lightning, brief torrential rainfall, and localized ponding on roads. While organized severe weather is not expected, an isolated stronger storm cannot be ruled out, and meteorologists will continue monitoring conditions.
The National Weather Service’s Hazardous Weather Outlook also notes that heat concerns will linger through the week, with maximum heat index values expected to climb into the triple digits across portions of Georgia. Stay hydrated, take frequent breaks outdoors, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Drivers along Interstates 20, 75, 85, 285, and Georgia 400 should remain alert for rapidly changing visibility if storms develop Wednesday afternoon. Travelers flying through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport may also encounter isolated weather-related delays during periods of stronger thunderstorms.
Looking ahead, scattered storms remain possible into Thursday before typical summer weather continues. Longer-range outlooks favor above-normal temperatures late next week, keeping the summer heat firmly in place across north Georgia.
