Truckee, California – Travel across the northern Sierra could remain hazardous overnight as moderate snow and strong winds continue to impact high-elevation roadways through Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday for elevations above 6,000 feet. Snow totals between 6 and 12 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts over peaks, while wind gusts could reach up to 55 mph.
Interstate 80 over Donner Pass and surrounding mountain routes will see snow-covered pavement, reduced visibility, and possible chain controls, especially during heavier bursts overnight. Blowing snow may further reduce visibility, creating sudden travel hazards for drivers.
Communities including Truckee and higher elevations near Blue Canyon will experience the greatest impacts, while lower foothill areas remain mostly rain.
Drivers are urged to check Caltrans QuickMap, carry tire chains, and allow extra time when traveling through the Sierra.
Conditions are expected to improve after sunrise Thursday, but slick roads and delays may persist into the morning commute.
