Billings, Montana – Drivers across southern Montana could encounter sudden icy roads overnight as pockets of freezing rain mix with snow, creating slick conditions before the Wednesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a light mix of freezing precipitation is expected from late Tuesday night through around 8 a.m. Wednesday. Even minor ice accumulation could quickly coat roads, especially untreated surfaces.
Areas including Billings, Hardin, Roundup, and Miles City are at risk for spotty icing, particularly along I-90 and surrounding rural roadways. The greatest concern is localized slick spots that may form unexpectedly, catching drivers off guard during early morning travel.
Pedestrians may also face icy sidewalks and driveways, increasing the risk of slips and falls.
Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and remain alert for rapidly changing road conditions. Checking Montana 511 road conditions before heading out is recommended.
Conditions are expected to improve after sunrise as temperatures gradually rise, but slick spots may linger into the mid-morning hours.
