Truckee, California – Travel over Donner Pass could become dangerous as snow and powerful winds intensify across the Sierra, creating slick roads and low visibility through early Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday for elevations above 6,000 feet along the west slope of the northern Sierra Nevada. Snow totals between 6 and 12 inches are expected, with higher amounts over peaks. Wind gusts could reach 55 mph.
Interstate 80 near Donner Pass and surrounding routes will see periods of moderate snowfall, with blowing snow reducing visibility and creating hazardous driving conditions. Snow levels will drop from around 6,500–7,000 feet to near 5,500 feet by Wednesday evening, expanding impacts to more roadways.
Strong winds may also bring down tree branches, adding to travel delays and potential road closures.
Drivers are urged to carry chains, allow extra time, and check Caltrans QuickMap or call 511 for real-time updates.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve Thursday morning, but hazardous travel may persist until the advisory expires.
