Paducah, KY – Summer-like heat surged across western Kentucky and the lower Ohio Valley Tuesday, breaking temperature records within hours and signaling a sharp shift ahead of an incoming cooldown.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, multiple long-standing records were tied or broken as temperatures climbed into the mid-80s. Paducah reached 84°F, matching its previous record set in 1986, while Evansville also hit 84°F, tying a 1981 record. Cape Girardeau and Poplar Bluff each reached 84°F, surpassing prior records of 83°F. Carbondale led the region, climbing to 85°F and breaking a record that had stood since 1940.

The widespread nature of the heat stretched across Kentucky, southern Illinois, and southeast Missouri, impacting cities along major corridors like I-24 and I-57. Residents reported unusually warm afternoon conditions more typical of early summer, increasing demand for cooling and outdoor activity.

This surge comes just ahead of a pattern change. Cooler air is expected to move in by Thursday, with temperatures dropping into the 40s and 50s alongside increased cloud cover.

Additional weather changes, including potential rain and storms, are expected midweek as the system pushes through the region.
