Lincoln, Ill. – A fast-moving severe thunderstorm is racing across central Illinois this morning, bringing damaging winds and hail that could impact travel along major interstates within minutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 10:15 a.m. CDT for northern Logan County, southeastern Tazewell County, and northeastern Mason County. As of 9:35 a.m., the storm was located just northwest of Mason City and moving east-northeast at 45 mph.
The storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to 1 inch in diameter. These conditions could cause damage to vehicles, roofs, siding, and trees, while also creating dangerous driving conditions.
Communities in the direct path include Mason City and San Jose around 9:40 a.m., Emden by 9:50 a.m., and Hartsburg by 9:55 a.m. The storm will continue tracking toward additional areas near the I-155 corridor and portions of I-55, including mile markers 127 and 134 to 137.
Drivers on these routes should be prepared for sudden visibility drops, debris, and slick road conditions as the storm moves through. Travel delays are likely during peak impact times.
Residents are urged to take shelter immediately in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and stay away from windows.
The storm will continue pushing east through mid-morning, and additional warnings may be issued if it strengthens further.
