Green Bay, Wis. – Drivers across central and eastern Wisconsin could face icy roads and difficult travel conditions starting Wednesday night, as a complex wintry system moves into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, snow and sleet will begin moving in Wednesday night before transitioning into a mix of freezing rain, rain, and wet snow by early Thursday morning. The heaviest impacts are expected across central Wisconsin, where ice accumulation and heavy, wet snowfall could create hazardous driving conditions.

Cities including Wausau, Stevens Point, and Appleton are in a zone where moderate impacts are possible, with ice accumulation potentially exceeding 0.10 inches in some areas. Major roadways such as I-39, I-41, and U.S. 10 could become slick, especially during the Thursday morning commute.

Farther east toward Green Bay and the Lake Michigan shoreline, warmer air may change precipitation to rain by Thursday afternoon, reducing ice risk but increasing the chance for slushy conditions and standing water on roads.

Residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, avoid unnecessary travel during peak icing, and monitor updates as small temperature shifts could significantly impact precipitation type and totals.

The system will taper off Thursday night, but additional advisories or warnings are likely as confidence in ice and snow amounts increases.
