Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms will move across the Mid-Atlantic today, bringing periods of heavy rainfall and an increased risk of localized flooding across parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. While widespread river flooding is not expected, smaller streams, creeks and poor-drainage areas could rise quickly where the heaviest rain falls.
According to the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, rainfall will be focused primarily across New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, although the exact placement of the heaviest storms remains uncertain. Forecast rainfall totals generally range from one-half inch to more than 1 inch, with isolated locations receiving higher amounts under repeated thunderstorms.
River forecast points are expected to remain below Action Stage, but officials warn that small, fast-responding rivers, creeks and urban drainage systems could experience rapid rises during heavier downpours. Areas near Trenton, Philadelphia, Allentown, Reading, Harrisburg, Scranton and northern New Jersey should monitor changing conditions throughout the day.
Drivers should be prepared for water-covered roads, reduced visibility and ponding on highways during periods of heavy rain. Residents living near small streams or flood-prone areas should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions and avoid walking or driving through flooded roadways.
Showers and thunderstorms will continue moving across the region into tonight. Additional flood advisories or flash flood warnings may be issued if storms repeatedly impact the same locations or rainfall rates become excessive.
