Cleveland, Ohio – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across northeast Ohio this afternoon and evening, with the greatest threat occurring between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, quarter-size hail and a few brief tornadoes could create dangerous conditions across the region before storms move southeast later tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, thunderstorms will develop ahead of an approaching cold front, with the highest severe weather threat stretching from the Lake Erie shoreline southward across northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania. Much of the region is under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe thunderstorms, while surrounding areas remain under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5).

Communities including Cleveland, Akron, Elyria, Sandusky, Ashtabula, Youngstown, Mansfield, New Philadelphia, Findlay and Marion could experience scattered storms capable of producing damaging straight-line winds, hail at least 1 inch in diameter and isolated tornadoes. Motorists traveling along Interstates 71, 76, 77, 80 and 90 should be prepared for rapidly changing weather, reduced visibility and debris on roadways as storms move from northwest to southeast.

Residents should secure outdoor furniture and other loose objects before storms arrive and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. If a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning is issued, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and stay away from windows. Never drive through flooded roadways during heavy downpours.

The severe weather threat is expected to diminish later this evening as the cold front pushes through the region, but additional watches and warnings may be issued throughout the afternoon as storms rapidly intensify.
