Raleigh, North Carolina – Dangerous heat will grip much of central North Carolina today, with heat index values climbing as high as 109 degrees, creating conditions that can quickly become hazardous for anyone spending extended time outdoors. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s to around 100 degrees during the afternoon, making this one of the hottest days of the recent stretch.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for most of central North Carolina. Forecasters expect a major to near extreme heat risk, especially during the afternoon and early evening when heat and humidity peak. People without access to air conditioning, outdoor workers, older adults and those with chronic health conditions face the highest risk of heat-related illness.
The dangerous heat will affect communities across the Triangle and Sandhills, including Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, Fayetteville, Sanford, Goldsboro, Rocky Mount, Burlington and surrounding areas. Heat can also impact roads, athletic practices, construction sites and outdoor events as pavement temperatures climb well above the air temperature.
Residents should drink plenty of water, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings if working or exercising outside. Plan strenuous activities for the early morning or evening, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
The hottest conditions are expected through the late afternoon before gradually easing after sunset. Continue monitoring forecasts from the National Weather Service, as additional heat advisories or warnings may be issued if dangerous temperatures persist.
