Albuquerque, N.M. – Dark clouds may bubble over the Sandia Mountains later today, even as sunshine pushes temperatures into the 90s across Albuquerque. The morning begins quietly, but the combination of summer heat and increasing monsoon moisture could quickly change outdoor plans by late afternoon.

Central New Mexico is entering another active stretch of monsoon weather, with afternoon thunderstorms expected on multiple days while temperatures climb into the middle 90s early next week. Residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions during the late afternoon and evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, today’s weather features a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after the afternoon, with a high near 93 degrees. Similar storm chances continue Sunday before temperatures climb to 95 degrees Monday and 96 degrees Tuesday, when another 40% chance of afternoon thunderstorms returns.

Storms will remain scattered rather than widespread, but any cell that develops could produce brief heavy rain, frequent lightning, gusty winds, and localized blowing dust. Visibility may drop quickly on Interstate 25, Interstate 40, and Paseo del Norte if stronger storms move across the metro area. While widespread flooding is not expected, low-water crossings and poor drainage areas could collect water during heavier downpours.

The building heat will also become an increasing concern. Afternoon temperatures in the middle 90s, combined with strong July sunshine, can create dangerous conditions for hikers, outdoor workers, and anyone attending weekend events. Stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Meteorologists continue tracking daily monsoon moisture across the Southwest. Storm coverage will vary from day to day, making it important to monitor radar before heading outside. Tornado potential remains very low, but lightning can strike well away from the heaviest rain.

Looking farther ahead, climate outlooks continue to favor above-normal temperatures across New Mexico during the 6-to-10-day period, with monsoon thunderstorms remaining a regular part of the afternoon pattern.
