Lake Charles, La. – The water is lingering where it normally shouldn’t, and one stretch of roadway remains vulnerable even as sunny skies return across southwest Louisiana. While the weekend turns hotter, a river flood threat continues to demand attention near Lake Charles.
A Flood Warning remains in effect for the Calcasieu River near White Oak Park through early Wednesday morning, even as dry and increasingly hot weather settles across much of southwest Louisiana.
According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, minor flooding is expected to continue along the river. The flood stage is 2.0 feet, and forecasters expect the river to crest near 2.2 feet by Sunday evening before gradually easing. At this level, minor flooding is expected along Goos Ferry Road, creating localized travel concerns for residents in the area.
Elsewhere around Lake Charles, skies become mostly sunny today with a high near 93 degrees. Heat index values could reach 103 degrees this afternoon, making outdoor conditions feel much hotter. By Sunday, temperatures climb to 95 degrees, with heat index values near 105 degrees. Even warmer weather arrives early next week, with highs approaching 97 to 98 degrees Monday and Tuesday.
Drivers should avoid flooded roads near White Oak Park, even if water appears shallow. Just a small amount of moving water can make road conditions hazardous. Anyone spending time outdoors should drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks, and limit strenuous activity during the hottest afternoon hours.
Across the Gulf Coast, high pressure is building while lingering river flooding continues in isolated locations from previous heavy rainfall. No widespread rain is expected through early next week, allowing many waterways to slowly recede, though flood warnings may remain until river levels safely fall below flood stage.
