Jackson, Miss. – The sun is climbing higher, the air already feels thick, and the heat is becoming impossible to ignore across central Mississippi. Even before the hottest part of the day arrives, the combination of blazing sunshine and tropical humidity is setting the stage for dangerous conditions that will linger into early next week.
A prolonged stretch of intense summer heat is underway across central Mississippi, with a Heat Advisory in effect from 10 a.m. today through 7 p.m. Monday. According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, heat index values could climb to 105 to 107 degrees, creating conditions that increase the risk of heat-related illnesses after only short periods outdoors.
Temperatures will rise into the middle and upper 90s today under mostly sunny skies, while light winds offer little relief. By Sunday and Monday, highs approach 97 to 98 degrees, and Tuesday could reach 100 degrees. Nights remain unusually warm, with lows staying in the middle to upper 70s, limiting opportunities to cool down.
The hottest conditions will affect communities across the Jackson metro, including Ridgeland, Clinton, Madison, Pearl, Brandon and surrounding counties. Motorists along Interstate 20, Interstate 55 and Interstate 220 should keep water in their vehicles and be prepared for rapid heat buildup during any roadside stops or vehicle breakdowns.
Unlike many midsummer afternoons, rain chances remain very limited through the period. That means little natural cooling is expected. While an isolated thunderstorm cannot be completely ruled out later in the week, widespread relief is not anticipated through Tuesday.
Stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing and limit strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon. Check on older adults, young children and anyone without reliable air conditioning. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a few minutes.
Forecast trends also suggest above-normal temperatures will continue into late next week, keeping summer heat firmly in place across Mississippi.
