Paducah, Ky. – The pavement is already warming under bright summer sunshine, and the air feels noticeably heavier as humidity rises across western Kentucky. While the morning remains relatively quiet, dangerous heat is quickly becoming the bigger story, with scattered thunderstorms expected to develop later in the day.

Residents across western Kentucky, southern Illinois and southeast Missouri should prepare for several days of oppressive heat. According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from noon today through 7 p.m. Tuesday. Heat index values between 100 and 105 degrees are expected, with some locations approaching 110 degrees Tuesday as humidity continues to build.

This afternoon will feature sunshine mixed with increasing clouds and only a 20% chance of scattered thunderstorms after 4 p.m. Any storm that develops could produce brief heavy rain, frequent lightning and gusty winds, especially across parts of southwest Indiana. Most communities, however, will experience the greatest impact from the prolonged heat.

Travelers along Interstate 24, Interstate 57 and the Purchase Parkway should keep extra water in their vehicles and avoid leaving children or pets inside parked cars. Outdoor workers, athletes and anyone attending weekend events should take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning and stay well hydrated.

Rain chances become more widespread by Sunday afternoon, with showers and thunderstorms possible after 4 p.m. Additional scattered storms remain possible into Monday before another hot afternoon develops. Forecast guidance also points toward another round of thunderstorms on Tuesday, July 21, although oppressive heat will remain the dominant concern.

The broader weather pattern favors continued above-normal temperatures across the Mid-Mississippi Valley into late next week. Stay alert for additional heat-related statements and any thunderstorm warnings that may be issued over the coming days.
