Grand Rapids, Michigan – A hazy sky hangs over western Michigan as smoke filters the sunshine, while scattered showers and thunderstorms continue to develop across the region. The air may look calm this morning, but changing conditions through the day could affect outdoor plans, travel, and air quality around Grand Rapids.

Western Michigan is dealing with two weather concerns today: wildfire smoke drifting south from Canada and scattered thunderstorms capable of producing brief heavy rain and gusty winds. According to the National Weather Service and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), an Air Quality Alert remains in effect through today, with fine particulate pollution reaching unhealthy levels for sensitive groups and potentially worse in some areas.

The National Weather Service expects a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before midday, followed by lingering storm chances into the afternoon. High temperatures climb to around 89 degrees, while southwest winds may gust as high as 28 mph, creating changing travel conditions on I-96, US-131, M-6 and I-196. Visibility could also fluctuate where thicker smoke moves across the region.

Residents with asthma, heart disease, older adults, and young children should limit prolonged outdoor activity. Keep windows closed if smoke becomes noticeable indoors, and use air filtration if available. If you must spend time outside, consider reducing strenuous activity until air quality improves.

Patchy smoke remains part of the forecast through Sunday, although skies gradually improve. Monday brings another opportunity for showers during the afternoon before a 90 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms Monday night. That system could bring locally heavier rainfall before cooler air arrives Tuesday and Wednesday.

Looking farther ahead, temperatures ease into the upper 70s by midweek before gradually warming again. The broader 6-to-10-day outlook favors above-normal temperatures returning across much of the Midwest later next week.
