Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Bright sunshine may tempt people toward Lake Michigan today, but the shoreline tells a different story. Powerful waves crash against piers, smoky skies linger overhead, and another round of thunderstorms waits later in the extended outlook. Conditions can change quickly, especially near the water.
Warm temperatures are returning across southeast Wisconsin, but the biggest concerns extend beyond the thermometer. According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through Sunday morning for Ozaukee, Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties. Waves of 3 to 5 feet and dangerous structural and longshore currents are expected, creating life-threatening swimming conditions along Lake Michigan.
Wildfire smoke drifting into southern Wisconsin is also expected to reduce visibility and contribute to unhealthy air quality at times through the weekend. Sensitive groups, including children, older adults and anyone with respiratory conditions, should consider limiting prolonged outdoor activity if smoke becomes more noticeable.
Away from the shoreline, today stays mostly sunny with a high near 85 degrees. Only a slight chance of a morning thunderstorm exists before skies brighten. Sunday turns cooler with a high around 77 degrees, although areas of smoke may continue to affect visibility.
Meteorologists are now tracking a more active weather pattern early next week. Monday brings a 40 percent chance of showers during the afternoon before rain becomes more widespread Monday night. Thunderstorms may strengthen across parts of southern Wisconsin, and the National Weather Service notes some storms could become severe. While tornado potential currently appears limited, residents should monitor updated outlooks as confidence increases.
If you’re heading to Bradford Beach, McKinley Beach or other Lake Michigan shorelines, stay out of the water and avoid piers and breakwalls. Drivers should also prepare for changing visibility if smoke thickens or heavier showers develop Monday.
Beyond Tuesday, sunshine gradually returns with cooler temperatures in the upper 70s. The longer-range outlook favors another warming trend with above-normal temperatures returning later next week.
