Springfield, Illinois – Storms capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts and large hail up to 1 inch in diameter are expected to develop this afternoon, threatening travel and outdoor plans across central Illinois through the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, scattered severe storms will form ahead of and behind a slow-moving cold front, impacting much of the state through Tuesday evening. The primary hazards include damaging winds and large hail, with a nonzero tornado risk, especially across northeast portions of central Illinois.

Communities including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, Decatur, and Champaign are all within the risk zone, with storms likely to intensify during the late afternoon and evening commute. Key corridors such as I-55, I-72, and I-74 could see rapidly changing conditions, including reduced visibility and debris from strong wind gusts.

Residents are urged to stay weather aware, secure outdoor items, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. If storms approach, move indoors immediately and avoid unnecessary travel during peak intensity.

The severe threat will persist into Tuesday night slowly clears the region, and additional warnings may be issued with little lead time.
