Paducah, Kentucky – Wind gusts topping 35 mph combined with very dry air are creating an elevated fire danger across western Kentucky today, making any outdoor burning especially risky through the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, sustained winds between 25 and 35 mph will develop through Tuesday, with higher gusts capable of rapidly spreading any fires that ignite. Temperatures will climb into the low to mid-80s, further drying out vegetation and increasing the risk across communities including Paducah, Mayfield, Murray, and Hopkinsville.

The strongest impacts are expected along open roadways such as I-24 and U.S. 60, where gusty crosswinds could also affect high-profile vehicles. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and secure loose items that could be blown around.

Rain chances return beginning Wednesday and continue through Saturday, bringing potential relief with forecast rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches. Scattered thunderstorms may also develop during this period, which could briefly impact travel and outdoor plans.

The elevated fire risk will persist through Tuesday evening before conditions gradually improve with increasing moisture midweek.
