Melbourne, Florida – Beachgoers along Florida’s east-central coast face life-threatening surf conditions today, with strong rip currents and waves up to 6 feet making ocean entry especially dangerous.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a high risk of rip currents is in effect Tuesday for all Atlantic beaches across Volusia, Brevard, and the Treasure Coast. Breezy onshore winds are driving rough surf, creating powerful currents capable of pulling swimmers away from shore within seconds.

Conditions will remain hazardous throughout the day, even as skies stay partly cloudy with only isolated light showers. Temperatures will climb near 80 degrees along the coast and into the low 80s inland, which could draw more people to the beaches despite the elevated danger.

Areas including Daytona Beach, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne Beach, and Vero Beach are all under the highest risk level. Lifeguards strongly advise staying out of the water, as rescue conditions may be difficult in the rough surf.

If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore to escape and avoid fighting the current directly. The high rip current risk will continue through Tuesday evening, and additional advisories may be issued if conditions persist.
