Providence, R.I. – Smoke hangs lightly across the Providence skyline late this morning, but a much different weather story is beginning to unfold. Clouds will continue building through the day before heavier rain and thunderstorms arrive, creating a combination of reduced air quality, gusty winds and locally heavy downpours that could affect travel before evening.

According to the National Weather Service and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect until 11 p.m. for all of Rhode Island. Fine particle pollution may reach unhealthy levels for sensitive groups, including children, older adults and people with asthma or other respiratory conditions. Even healthy individuals may notice irritation during prolonged outdoor activity.

The weather turns increasingly active this afternoon. The National Weather Service expects an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms, with some storms capable of producing heavy rainfall. South to southwest winds of 13 to 18 mph may gust to 30 mph, adding another challenge for anyone traveling or spending time outdoors. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, an isolated stronger thunderstorm with gusty winds and frequent lightning remains possible.

Motorists using Interstate 95, Interstate 195, Route 6 and Route 10 should watch for rapidly changing visibility and ponding water during heavier rain. Slow down on wet pavement and allow extra stopping distance. If thunder roars, move indoors until storms pass.

Conditions improve quickly Sunday as sunshine returns with a high near 81 degrees. Monday stays dry and comfortable with abundant sunshine before another weather system approaches Tuesday, bringing a renewed chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Rain becomes more widespread Tuesday night into Wednesday before gradually tapering later in the week.

The Climate Prediction Center continues to favor above-normal temperatures across southern New England during the 6-to-10-day outlook, pointing toward a warmer pattern into late next week.

Stay alert for changing weather this afternoon, especially if you have outdoor plans or travel scheduled. Are you already seeing hazy skies or building storm clouds in your neighborhood?
