Chicago, Illinois – Storms moving in from Iowa could bring damaging winds to northern Illinois within hours, with the greatest threat developing after 9 p.m. tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, scattered thunderstorms are expanding eastward and are expected to impact areas including Rockford, DeKalb, Aurora, Joliet, and the Chicago metro through 10 p.m. The primary concern is localized damaging wind gusts capable of downing tree limbs, along with isolated hail up to 1 inch in diameter.

Storms will track east-northeast at speeds of 40 to 45 mph, meaning conditions can change quickly across major corridors like I-88, I-90, and I-55. Communities west of Chicago, including Dixon and Ottawa, may see impacts first before activity pushes into the metro area later this evening.

Drivers could encounter sudden heavy rain and strong wind gusts, especially during the late evening hours. Reduced visibility and debris on roadways are possible in stronger cells.

Residents are urged to move indoors if thunder is heard, secure loose outdoor items, and remain alert for warnings. The storm threat is expected to diminish after 10 p.m., though additional updates may be issued if stronger storms develop.
