Springfield, Illinois – Another round of storms could intensify quickly late Tuesday afternoon, bringing the risk of large hail and damaging winds across central Illinois during peak travel hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, thunderstorms are expected to develop from late Tuesday afternoon into the evening, with the greatest severe threat focused north of Interstate 70. Large hail exceeding 1 inch and wind gusts approaching 60 mph are the primary concerns, while any tornado risk is expected to remain northeast of central Illinois into northern Indiana.
Cities including Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign, and areas along the I-74 corridor sit in a higher risk zone, while Springfield and surrounding communities may still see strong storms capable of producing gusty winds and frequent lightning.
Storms are expected to move quickly, which could lead to sudden drops in visibility and hazardous driving conditions during the evening commute. Ponding on roads and isolated power outages are also possible where storms become strongest.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, move vehicles under cover, and stay alert for warnings. The severe threat will continue through Tuesday night, with additional updates likely as storms develop.
