Lubbock, Texas – Residents across the South Plains and Rolling Plains could see a few showers and thunderstorms tonight before a warming trend takes hold this weekend and sets the stage for hotter weather across West Texas next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, overnight conditions will remain mild and humid, with a 10% to 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms. While widespread rainfall is not expected, stronger storms could produce spotty heavy rainfall, creating brief travel hazards and localized ponding on roads.
South winds of 5 to 15 mph will continue through the night, with overnight lows ranging from 63 to 70 degrees across the region. Any thunderstorms that develop are expected to remain isolated, but lightning and brief downpours will be possible.
The unsettled pattern will linger through the weekend with low chances for additional afternoon and evening thunderstorms before drier conditions gradually take over. At the same time, temperatures will steadily climb, with much hotter weather expected to settle across the South Plains early next week.
Communities including Lubbock, Plainview, Levelland, Brownfield, Littlefield and Childress should monitor the weather if outdoor plans extend into the evening, as thunderstorms may develop quickly despite relatively low rain chances.
Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware tonight and prepare for increasing heat in the days ahead by staying hydrated and limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon. Additional forecast updates may be issued as rain chances and next week’s heat become better defined.
