Springfield, Illinois – Thunderstorms developing after midnight could quickly turn severe, with large hail posing the biggest risk across central Illinois before sunrise Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, isolated storms are expected to form mainly north of a Burlington, Iowa to Pontiac, Illinois line after midnight. The primary threat is hail exceeding 1 inch in diameter, with additional risks including wind gusts up to 60 mph and frequent lightning.

Communities including Galesburg, Peoria, Bloomington, and Champaign sit within the higher risk zone, while Springfield and areas farther south may see weaker or more isolated activity. Storms are expected to move east at around 50 mph, increasing the chance of rapid changes in conditions overnight.

Drivers along I-55, I-74, and I-72 should be prepared for sudden downpours and reduced visibility during the early morning hours. Hail could also damage vehicles left outdoors.

Residents are urged to enable weather alerts, move cars under cover if possible, and be ready to take shelter if warnings are issued. The severe threat is expected to diminish shortly after sunrise Tuesday, though additional updates may follow if storms intensify overnight.
