Herkimer, New York – Roads near creeks and low-lying areas in the western Mohawk Valley and Adirondacks could begin taking on water by Tuesday morning as rain and melting snow combine to swell waterways.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Flood Watch remains in effect for Herkimer and Hamilton counties from Tuesday morning through Wednesday evening. Rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches, paired with ongoing snowmelt, may produce enough runoff to push rivers, streams, and creeks out of their banks.
Communities including Little Falls, Ilion, Old Forge, Long Lake, and Dolgeville face the highest risk, especially near smaller waterways that respond quickly to heavy rain. Periods of showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop Tuesday morning and persist into Wednesday afternoon, increasing the chance of rapid water rises.
In the southwest Adirondacks, runoff from higher elevations could funnel into already swollen streams, while parts of the Mohawk Valley may see ponding on roads and flooding in poor drainage areas. Drivers should avoid water-covered roads, particularly overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday when visibility drops.
Residents in flood-prone locations are urged to monitor conditions closely, clear nearby drains, and be ready to act if warnings are issued. The flood threat continues through Wednesday evening, with additional alerts possible as conditions evolve.
