Wheaton, Illinois – Drivers in DuPage County will need to reroute immediately Wednesday morning as a key railroad crossing shuts down for more than a full day, disrupting one of Wheaton’s main north-south corridors.
According to the City of Wheaton Government, Union Pacific Railroad crews will close the Washington Street crossing at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, with repairs continuing through 5 p.m. Thursday, April 2. The closure is expected to block all through traffic at the tracks, forcing detours during peak commute hours and into Thursday evening.
Northbound drivers on Washington Street will be redirected east on Crescent Street, then north on President Street, west on College Avenue, and back north onto Washington Street. Southbound traffic will follow a reverse-style route using College Avenue, President Street, Crescent Street, and reconnecting with Washington Street.
The shutdown directly impacts commuters traveling between downtown Wheaton and nearby neighborhoods, as well as drivers connecting to larger routes across DuPage County. Local officials urge motorists to allow extra travel time and avoid the area during morning and evening commutes if possible.
Drivers should watch for posted signage and expect congestion on Crescent, President, and College Avenue as traffic shifts. Updates will follow if repairs extend beyond Thursday evening.
