Connersville, IN – A 71-year-old man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Sunday night in Fayette County, prompting an ongoing investigation by Indiana State Police.

According to Indiana State Police, the shooting happened around 9 p.m. Sunday near the 6000 block of County Road 200 E, where Fayette County deputies responded to a reported domestic disturbance involving gunfire. Preliminary information indicates deputies arrived and established a perimeter around the residence while attempting to make contact with individuals inside, repeatedly calling for them to exit safely.

Investigators say that after about an hour, officers allegedly observed a male suspect, identified as Michael Sims, 71, inside the home pointing a firearm at others still inside before allegedly turning the weapon toward law enforcement. At that point, a deputy discharged a department-issued rifle, striking Sims.

Emergency responders on scene immediately initiated life-saving measures, but Sims was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said his family has been notified.

No deputies or other individuals were reported injured during the incident.

Indiana State Police detectives and crime scene investigators are continuing to process evidence and repeatedly examine the sequence of events leading up to the shooting. As is standard procedure, the deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including the Fayette County Sheriffโ€™s Office, Connersville Police Department, Fayette County Coronerโ€™s Office and the Fayette County Prosecutorโ€™s Office.

Upon completion of the investigation, findings will be submitted to the Fayette County Prosecutorโ€™s Office for review. Officials say no additional information is being released at this time.
