New York, N.Y. – Air quality will improve through the early morning hours Friday, clearing the way for a warm summer afternoon with temperatures climbing into the mid and upper 80s across much of the New York City metropolitan area.

According to the National Weather Service office in New York, smoky conditions from Canadian wildfires will gradually diminish after sunrise Friday. By the afternoon, partly cloudy skies are expected with highs reaching around 89 degrees in New York City and Newark, 88 degrees in White Plains, Stony Brook and Islip, 87 degrees in Syosset, 86 degrees in Bridgeport, Poughkeepsie and Morristown, and 85 degrees across much of southern Connecticut, including New Haven, Hartford, New London and Norwich.

The warmest readings will develop inland, while ocean-facing communities remain cooler because of onshore winds. Montauk is expected to top out near 83 degrees, with offshore waters holding in the upper 70s. Travelers and anyone spending extended time outside should still be aware that lingering haze may be visible early in the day before conditions steadily improve.

As temperatures climb during the afternoon, residents should stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing and take frequent breaks if working outdoors. While the worst of the smoke is expected to move away from the region, those with asthma or other respiratory conditions may still experience minor irritation during the morning hours.

The pleasant but warm pattern continues through Friday evening, and the National Weather Service will provide additional updates if smoke returns or air quality conditions change heading into the weekend.
