Michigan – Sunshine is breaking through this morning across northern Lower Michigan, but a sharp and messy shift is already lining up that could turn wet roads slick with ice by midweek. The calm start won’t last long.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord , conditions stay mostly sunny today with highs near 56°F before showers begin developing later. A few thunderstorms are possible into the evening across northern Lower Michigan, with brief downpours and lightning.

Rain becomes widespread Tuesday, with showers likely through the day and into the evening. Some storms may strengthen, bringing heavier bursts of rain and reduced visibility along US-131, M-32, and surrounding routes. Plan for slower travel and keep headlights on during heavier showers.

Colder air begins pushing in by Wednesday. Rain mixes with snow at times, especially later in the day, signaling a transition that becomes more impactful by Thursday.

By Thursday morning, a messy wintry mix takes hold. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain are all possible, with light ice accumulation creating hazardous travel conditions. Even a thin glaze can make roads, bridges, and sidewalks slick. This is a classic setup for early spring flash freezing as temperatures hover near freezing.

Temperatures fall from the mid-50s today to the upper 30s by Wednesday, then remain near the mid-30s Thursday before slowly recovering.

Looking ahead, scattered rain or snow showers linger into Friday, but warmer air begins building into the first weekend of April.
