Lincoln, IL – A stretch of hot and humid summer weather is expected to continue across central Illinois through the end of the week, with heat index values climbing into the triple digits before scattered thunderstorms return later this week.
According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, afternoon high temperatures will reach the lower 90s from Wednesday through Saturday, while humidity will push heat index values into the upper 90s and lower 100s, with some locations reaching 100 to 105 degrees.
Forecast highs include 90 to 93 degrees Wednesday, 90 to 93 degrees Thursday, 87 to 91 degrees Friday, and 89 to 93 degrees Saturday. The hottest “feels-like” temperatures are expected Saturday, when heat index values could climb as high as 105 degrees.
Forecasters also expect scattered thunderstorms to develop beginning Thursday afternoon and continue into Saturday, with the greatest chance for rain on Friday. While widespread severe weather is not currently anticipated, thunderstorms may produce brief heavy rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds.
The National Weather Service urges residents to limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Officials also remind motorists to never leave children or pets unattended inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can rise to life-threatening levels within minutes.
The combination of prolonged heat and high humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for older adults, young children, outdoor workers, and those without access to adequate cooling. Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts as conditions evolve through the weekend.
