Detroit, Michigan – Severe thunderstorms are set to hit Southeast Michigan during the Tuesday evening commute, followed by a sharp temperature drop that could bring a rain-to-snow mix within 24 hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, storms will develop Tuesday afternoon and intensify between 4 p.m. and midnight, with damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to 1 inch possible. A slight risk covers much of Southeast Michigan, including Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, and the I-94 corridor.

Temperatures will climb into the low to mid-70s Tuesday before plunging overnight into the 30s and 40s by Wednesday morning. Highs Wednesday may struggle to reach the upper 40s in some areas, especially north toward the Thumb and Saginaw Valley.

Rain transitions to a wintry mix Wednesday night, particularly across northern sections, before changing back to all rain by Thursday as temperatures rebound into the upper 40s to upper 60s. Roads along I-75 and I-69 could become slick briefly during the transition period.

Secure outdoor items ahead of Tuesday’s storms and prepare for rapidly changing conditions midweek. Additional advisories are likely as the temperature swing and precipitation shift develop.
