Caribou, ME – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across parts of Maine Tuesday afternoon and evening, with the greatest threat now focused on the state’s central and western regions.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, the latest forecast guidance indicates the highest risk for severe thunderstorms has shifted to central and western Maine, although severe weather remains possible across much of the state.
Forecasters expect thunderstorms to develop and intensify after 4 p.m. Tuesday, with the potential to produce damaging wind gusts, large hail, and an isolated tornado. Officials cautioned that storms may strengthen rapidly, giving residents little time to react.
While the greatest risk is centered over inland portions of western and central Maine, other areas of the state could also experience strong thunderstorms capable of producing hazardous weather.
The National Weather Service urges residents to closely monitor weather conditions throughout the afternoon and evening. People are encouraged to enable emergency weather alerts on their phones and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
If a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning is issued, seek shelter immediately inside a sturdy building and stay away from windows. If a substantial building is not available, officials recommend taking shelter in a hard-topped vehicle as a last resort rather than remaining outdoors.
Additional forecast updates may be issued as storm development becomes clearer later today.
