Caribou, Maine – Slippery roads could develop quickly across northern Maine after 6 p.m. Tuesday as a wintry mix moves in, raising the risk for ice-covered travel into Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, snow will transition to sleet and freezing rain Tuesday evening, with the highest icing threat centered across Aroostook County, including Caribou, Presque Isle, and Houlton. Ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch are possible, enough to create hazardous conditions on untreated roads and elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses.

Areas along Route 1 and I-95 could see reduced traction and visibility overnight, especially between midnight and 7 a.m. Wednesday. Farther south toward Bangor and Downeast Maine, precipitation may fall more as rain, limiting icing but still creating wet, slick travel.

Light snow showers are possible Monday across the Saint John Valley, though accumulations will remain under one inch. Temperatures climb into the 40s and low 50s south before dropping into the 20s and 30s overnight, setting the stage for freezing conditions.

Another round of wintry weather may arrive by Friday, adding to travel concerns. Residents should avoid unnecessary overnight travel Tuesday, treat walkways, and prepare for rapidly changing road conditions. Warnings remain possible as confidence increases.
