Seattle, Washington – Drivers across western Washington could encounter black ice as early as 5 to 6 a.m. Monday, as temperatures fall to near freezing overnight while roads remain wet from recent rainfall.
According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, rain will taper off Sunday night, but lingering moisture combined with cooler air will create ideal conditions for icy patches during the early morning commute. Temperatures are expected to drop to around 30 to 32°F across the Puget Sound region, including Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett.
Bridges, overpasses, and shaded roadways will freeze first, especially along major corridors like I-5, I-405, and Highway 167. Areas that saw heavier rainfall—such as Olympia, Tacoma, and parts of the Kitsap Peninsula—face a higher risk of slick surfaces.
The risk continues into Tuesday morning as overnight lows remain at or below freezing, allowing repeated thaw-and-freeze cycles. Visibility issues are not expected to be widespread, but isolated icy spots could catch drivers off guard.
Motorists should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid sudden braking on bridges and ramps. Crews may treat priority roadways, but untreated surfaces will remain hazardous. Additional advisories could be issued if colder temperatures persist into early week.
