Hastings, Nebraska – A dramatic temperature swing will hit central Nebraska within the next 36 hours, with summer-like warmth near 90°F Monday quickly giving way to a sharp cooldown, strong winds, and even a chance for snow by Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, highs Monday will surge into the lower 80s to lower 90s across much of the state, including Grand Island and Kearney. Winds remain relatively light Monday, but changes arrive quickly overnight as rain develops.
By Tuesday afternoon, a cold front pushes through, dropping temperatures into the 50s and 60s while north winds increase to 10 to 30 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Rain becomes more widespread during the day, impacting travel along I-80 and surrounding highways.
The biggest shift arrives Wednesday, when highs struggle to reach the 40s and overnight lows dip into the 20s and 30s. Rain is expected to mix with or change to snow, especially during the morning hours, which could create slick spots on bridges and rural roads.
Residents should prepare for rapid weather changes, secure loose outdoor items ahead of Tuesday’s winds, and stay alert for possible travel impacts by midweek. Additional updates are likely as the system develops.
